Thermal Imaging CCTV – is this the future workplace for most of us? Whatever the occasion, normal life for all of us involves mixing with others. Whether this is an office environment, a crowded lift, or riding the London underground; we are often in close proximity to one another, this is the nature of life.
After social distancing, this is probably going to be a strange concept. One resolution to this could be the introduction on a large scale of thermal imaging cameras. Thermal imaging cameras use sensors in order to detect infrared heat emitted from a person, no matter whether they are alone or in a crowd.

Would thermal imaging CCTV be able to detect a virus such as Covid-19?
The simple answer to this is no. However, body temperature has been a key indicator of overall wellness in respect to Covid-19 since the pandemic started. While thermal imaging cameras cannot identify an infection such as this, it can detect changes in temperature which would be classed as Elevated Body Temperature (EBT). The temperature range of an individual could easily be spotted, identified and then be taken elsewhere for additional screening.
How best to reduce the risk of visitors with Covid-19 symptoms?
One of the many concerns for businesses in general but especially for events-based businesses with large crowds, is how they can get back to business. This element of the entertainment industry has certainly been one of the hardest hit by this pandemic. The very essence of large numbers of people getting together seems very alien in concept currently, but businesses will be looking for ways in which they can make this a reality. Thermal imagery CCTV would certainly come into its own here. But it’s not just concerts and events which this would be in need of this technology, it would apply to any business which wants to return to some level of ‘normality’. By using this kind of application, managing the risk to the population would be much easier for an office environment, busy city locations, train stations, football stadiums and indeed anywhere you can expect to find people!
Another way to manage the risk would be to implement turnstiles in areas where lots of people may be working. This is a form of gate that allows one person to pass at a time. This is a great way to encourage social distancing when people do begin returning to work, and allows for quicker identification for anybody who may be at risk of having the virus. One of the most notable symptoms of the virus is having a high temperature. Once you have implemented ways to manage the risk of people spreading the virus, it’s important to have a way to actually identify if a person has it or not.
What other advantages do Thermal Imaging cameras hold?
They have many visual detection functions, for example they would be able to identify if an individual was wearing a face mask. If they were not, it would be possible to refuse access through control of the CCTV and Access Control. In this instance there would be no need for the confrontation from one person to another, it could all be handled remotely.
Social distancing measures and infringements could also be measured by such a device. This type of software would also be able to record when violations occur in the regard of safety to all in the work place.
They can also detect whether a person crosses an entry or exit point. It will display the number of people inside a location and indicate whether or not maximum occupancy has been reached or not, allowing you to enforce control measures around the entry.
Are Thermal Imaging cameras a worthwhile investment?
Thermal Imaging cameras could well be the future of security in the workplace as we know it. After all, our staff are our most important assets, protecting their health and safety is paramount to our own success. This type of technology offers many advantages for both the protection of individuals and property, so we can see this being a huge market leader in years to come.
Main Installations of Thermal Imaging Cameras
Thermal cameras are vital to a wide variety of environments where there is a regular stream of people coming in and out of entrances and exits that may be difficult to slow for screening, for example:
- Healthcare Facilities
- Educational Facilities
- Commercial/Business Premises
- Retail/High St
- Bus/Coach/Train/Airports
